Returned via Jordan: The activists, who included Mandla Mandela, had been detained by the Israeli navy and were repatriated to South Africa via Jordan.
Solidarity with Palestinians: The activists had undertaken the mission to highlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis and break the siege of Gaza.
