The Palestinian Solidarity Alliance welcomes news of a ceasefire after over two years of relentless Israeli bombardment and unimaginable suffering in Gaza. However, we urge the world to approach this announcement with caution and clear eyes.
Even after the ceasefire was declared, Israel has continued to bomb indiscriminately, killing and injuring civilians in flagrant violation of international law. The genocide hasn’t stopped. For Palestinians, the so-called “end of fighting” does not mark the end of violence. The siege, the occupation, the apartheid system, and the daily dehumanisation persist.
We therefore refuse to treat this ceasefire as a conclusion. It must instead be recognised as the beginning of a real political process grounded in justice, accountability, and freedom for the Palestinian people. Any sustainable peace requires:
- An immediate and permanent end to the blockade of Gaza.
- The opening of the Rafah border post to allow aid into the Strip
- The immediate reinstatement of UNRWA to manage the aid distribution
- The release of all Palestinian political hostages.
- That the Palestinians themselves decide on the negotiations process, free from outside imperialist forces or agents.
- An end to Israel’s illegal occupation and settlement expansion.
- International accountability for war crimes and violations of human rights.
We call on South Africa, the African Union, and the broader international community to ensure that the pursuit of justice does not end with silence or selective diplomacy. A ceasefire without justice is only an intermission in a longer tragedy.
The Palestinian people deserve not just a pause in the bombing — they deserve freedom, dignity, and a future without occupation.
