Sumud flotilla marks biggest Gaza aid effort as fleet doubles in size

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) has expanded significantly in Italy, with its fleet now surpassing last year’s size, marking a major expansion of its efforts to deliver aid to Gaza.  In a statement sent to The New Arab on Thursday, organisers confirmed the flotilla has grown by 50%, with 25 additional boats set to join vessels sailing from Barcelona at Marina di Siracusa. The fleet is expected to depart on Friday. 

A tale of two Middle East voyages

Global Sumud Flotilla disrupts cargo ship bound for Israel

Activists with the Global Sumud Flotilla have disrupted the MSC Maya, a cargo ship they believe was carrying materials used for Israeli weapons to the ports of Ashdod and Haifa. The vessel is operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, which Al Jazeera confirms has carried hundreds of shipments to and from illegal Israeli settlements.

More than 3 000 participants from over 100 countries will once again sail on more than 100 vessels as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla Spring 2026 mission to Gaza. This year’s mission will deploy a specialised medical fleet carrying more than 1 000 healthcare professionals and stocked with life-saving medicines and equipment. The previous Flotilla that sailed last year was intercepted by the Government of Israel, with global participants including Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, Zukiswa Wanner being detained and later released after a global outcry.
