The 17th of April is a significant day of commemoration for two peoples separated by continents but subjected to the same neo-colonial, imperialist oppression. These two peoples’ manner of commemoration is widely different. For Cubans, it is a celebration of their victory over the US-backed ‘Bay of Pigs’ invasion. However, for Palestinians it is not a day of celebration; it is a day of sombre and sober reflection.

Sexual violence by Israeli soldiers documented by Euro-Med Monitor
A new report by the Euro-Med Monitor documents dozens of testimonies from Palestinian victims from the Gaza Strip who were subjected to sexual violence, including rape, inside Israeli prisons and detention centres.

UN experts says torture of Marwan Barghouti part of systemic abuse in prisons
Al Jazeera, 16 April 2026: Francesca Albanese, UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory, said torture in Israeli prisons has become institutionalised and the case of Marwan Barghouti was revealing of a system in “profound moral and legal decay”.
“I’ve investigated torture in Israeli prisons for quite a while now, and this is why I decided to write a report,” Albanese told Al Jazeera, adding that other investigations have found that “torture was becoming a state practice”.
